Trends move through the barbershop before they show up anywhere else. We see what guys are asking for, what actually works across different hair types, and what’s genuinely lasting versus what’s already fading out. Here’s what we’ve been cutting most in 2025 and what’s worth knowing before you sit down.
The Fade Is Still Dominant — But the Details Have Shifted
Fades aren’t going anywhere. But which fade guys are asking for has changed:
- Mid fades are the most requested style we cut right now. Not as aggressive as a high fade, cleaner than a low — versatile enough to work with almost any top style
- Low skin fades have grown significantly for guys who want something sharp but subtle. Clean without being loud
- High fades are still popular but typically paired with more intentional top styling — if the sides are that stark, the top has to match
If you’re new to fades and not sure where to start, mid is usually the right entry point for most face shapes and hair types.
The Taper Has Made a Real Comeback
A taper — a gradual reduction from the top down to the neckline without a sharp fade line — is getting requested more than it was two or three years ago. It reads cleaner, more professional, and it grows out better than a hard fade.
This is the style if you work in a more formal environment, have standards you need to meet (Corps guys, especially), or just want something that doesn’t require a barber visit every two weeks to stay looking sharp.
Textured Crops Are Everywhere
Short on the sides, slightly longer and textured on top. This one works across hair types — straight, wavy, thick, fine. It’s easy to style with minimal product and grows out well enough that it still looks intentional between visits.
The key to a good textured crop is in the technique, not just the length. A skilled barber will point-cut the top to build in texture rather than just chopping it flat. If you’ve had a textured crop that looked blunt or sat heavy, that’s likely what went wrong.
What’s Working for Curly and Natural Hair
Guys with natural curl patterns have more options than they did a few years ago, and more barbers who know what they’re doing with it:
- The curly crop — short on the sides with natural curl maintained on top with shape
- The tapered shape-up — more length on top, clean taper on the sides, hairline tight
- Natural texture with shape-up — letting the pattern do the work while keeping the hairline sharp
The most important thing for curly and coily hair: find a barber who cuts it regularly. The technique is genuinely different from straight hair — it’s not just a length adjustment.
The “Low Maintenance But Still Sharp” Category
A lot of guys come in specifically asking for something they don’t have to think about each morning. The honest options:
- Buzz cuts — virtually zero daily maintenance, but you’re back in the chair every 2–3 weeks or it starts looking grown out
- Crew cuts — minimal styling, works for most hair types, grows out predictably and cleanly
- Classic tapers — versatile, looks professional with or without product, holds up between visits better than a hard fade
The trade-off with low-maintenance cuts is usually frequency. The shorter and tighter the cut, the more often it needs attention to stay looking right.
How to Tell Your Barber What You Want
This is where a lot of guys struggle, and it’s worth thinking about before you sit down:
- Bring a photo. A reference image removes almost all ambiguity. It doesn’t have to be exact — it just gives your barber a starting point and avoids a lot of back-and-forth description
- Describe what you don’t like. Sometimes it’s easier to say “I hate when it looks like this after two weeks” than to explain what you’re after
- Be honest about your routine. If you’re not going to style every morning, say so. Your barber will cut differently knowing that
- Ask what they think. A good barber will tell you honestly whether what you’re describing will work with your specific hair type and face shape
